Persson said in an interview that they experienced food insecurity around once a month. His father moved to a cabin in the countryside. When Persson was around age seven, his parents divorced, and he and his sister lived with their mother. He spent much time outdoors in Edsbyn, exploring the woods with his friends. In Edsbyn, Persson's father worked for the railroad and his mother was a nurse. He grew up in Edsbyn until age 7, before his family moved back to Stockholm. Markus Alexej Persson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to a Finnish mother Ritva and a Swedish father Birger on 1 June 1979. Since 2015, he has worked on a separate game studio called Rubberbrain. In 2019, Microsoft denounced Persson's views, removed mentions of him from Minecraft, and did not invite him to the game's tenth anniversary celebration. In the following years, despite having previously promoted the use of the then-progressive singular "they" pronoun and criticizing homophobia, Persson began making controversial public comments such as claiming that trans women aren't women, that QAnon is "legit", and that those against a heterosexual pride day should be shot. In September 2014, following the realization that he had "become a symbol" and "lacked the connection to his fans he thought he had", he left Mojang, selling the company to Microsoft for $2.5 billion, posting a farewell letter on his blog and on Pastebin. He was lead designer until the game was finished and released in 2011, after which he transferred creative authority to Jens Bergensten. He reached massive critical success for his release of Minecraft in 2009, which sold ten million copies by 2011. Persson began developing video games at an early age, making games both professionally and in his spare time for much of his life.
